Mentoring

At ATU we hope to build a mentor-rich environment.

This means our campuses are spaces where mentoring is promoted to cultivate a culture of mentoring.

We will provide you with opportunities throughout your student experience to ensure you are supported to access, enjoy, and succeed in your education by having access to mentors and by having the opportunity to be mentors to others.

We also want to support students to find mentors and initiate mentoring relationships themselves.

Background

Mentoring can be a valuable way to help students adjust to university life and to share their experiences, one-on-one, with future students.

How could this affect me?

You can benefit greatly from mentoring for several reasons:

1. Social and Communication Support

  • A mentor can provide a safe, structured environment to practice these skills, reducing anxiety and building confidence.

2. Navigating Academic and Campus Life

  • University or school environments can be overwhelming due to sensory stimuli, complex schedules, and unspoken social norms. Mentors can help interpret these norms, assist with time management, and guide students through academic expectations.

3. Emotional Regulation and Stress Management

  • Mentors can offer strategies for coping with stress, sensory overload, and transitions, which are common difficulties for students.

4. Building Self-Advocacy Skills

  • Mentoring encourages students to articulate their needs and seek accommodations, fostering independence and empowerment.

5. Career and Personal Development

  • Mentors can help students identify strengths, set goals, and prepare for employment or further education, bridging the gap between academic life and the workplace.

6. Sense of Belonging

  • Having a mentor can reduce feelings of isolation and promote inclusion, which is crucial for mental health and overall well-being.
